Better eye surgery may help older drivers avoid accidents 

New technology for eye surgery can help people with cataracts avoid traffic accidents, according to the companies that developed and are marketing the procedure.

At a news conference last week, doctors and officials of Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) released the results of a new study on the results of cataract surgery using a lens implant that does a better job of helping the eye focus on light and produces a sharper image.

The lens, which is flatter and can fold, compensates for something called "spherical aberrations," which older eyes can no longer do.

The study, "Seeing is Believing: Advancing Senior Health and Automotive Safety" showed how the Tecnis lens, designed by Wavefront technology and manufactured by Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, can provide a 10 percent increase in the detection of objects and improve reaction time to such things as brake lights by half a second over older lenses
