New technology for eye surgery can help people with cataracts avoid traffic accidents, according to the companies that developed and are marketing the procedure.
At a news conference last week, doctors and officials of Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) released the results of a new study on the results of cataract surgery using a lens implant that does a better job of helping the eye focus on light and produces a sharper image.
The lens, which is flatter and can fold, compensates for something called "spherical aberrations," which older eyes can no longer do.
The study, "Seeing is Believing: Advancing Senior Health and Automotive Safety" showed how the Tecnis lens, designed by Wavefront technology and manufactured by Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, can provide a 10 percent increase in the detection of objects and improve reaction time to such things as brake lights by half a second over older lenses
